CS373 Fall 2020 Week 9: Caitlin O’Callaghan

What did you do this past week?

This past week we wrapped up the phase II project and started on phase III. We were able to fix up some of our tests and clean up code from the last phase. I also had a government exam and realized that I have another exam next week, my 4th straight week of exams, unfortunately.

What’s in your way?

Phase II was pretty tough for my team. We spent at least 15 hours trying to figure out how to deploy on AWS amplify with docker since the beginning of the project and went to office hours a few times as well. We eventually ended up switching to a different method of deployment shortly before it was recommended not to use it and people posted tutorials on other deployment services. I’m glad we finally switched now though so that it wont be an issue for future phases.

What will you do next week?

Next week I have a chemistry exam so I will need to manage my time so that I can balance it between my SWE project and studying for the exam. My group will begin working on searching, filtering and sorting. I also hope to get more sleep and be able to relax some more.

If you read it, what did you think of Ethical CS?

I have not read it yet.

What was your experience of functions, lambdas and decorators?

I was surprised to learn more about everything python can do, especially with things like lambdas and decorators. I feel like in the past I have always thought of python as simple but it has a lot of really cool functionality.

What made you happy this week?

This week, finally getting to go home and see my family and visit my dogs made me happy! The weather was also really nice and chilly. Some of the leaves are starting to change colors and I really enjoyed spending time outside.

What’s your pick of the week or tip of the week?

I recommend toggl for time tracking for your SWE project or even just your user stories. You can type in what task you’re working on and categorize it under a project, you just have to start the timer and remember to stop it. I’ve found this really helpful so far!
